The Little Giant Opening to the World from Turkey

2023

AFTER TAKING PART IN MANY QUALIFIED PROJECTS IN TURKEY; MUSTAFA TOPRAKCEKEN, THE CO-PARTNER AND THE CEO OF MONO STEEL, WHICH INITIALLY STARTED TO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AND THEN TO THE WHOLE WORLD, TELLS THEIR MEGA PROJECTS IN THE U.S. AND PLANS OF HIS BRAND IN THE FUTURE.

Mono Steel is a deep-rooted company that has taken part in numerous projects in Turkey and around the world. We produce qualified steel structures for special projects. Metal and non-metal products in the GTIP code in particular, all kinds of industrial structures, tunnel equipment, energy sector, road and bridge constructions, machinery sector, sports facilities and housing projects constitute our fields of activity. For the last 4 years, we have become a sought-after player in the UK, Australian, Canadian, European, African and Asian markets. Stepping into the U.S. at the end of 2021, we achieved our goal of becoming a global brand. We are now taking pride in being part of mega projects in the U.S.

You know, the Seattle Ship Canal Water Quality Project was one of the mega projects of the U.S. last year. We are the only Turkish company involved in this project. One of the biggest problems regarding the Seattle Canal is sewer overflows. Every year, 276 million liters of contaminated water on average flows into the Lake Washington Ship Canal, Salmon Bay and Lake Union due to rainfall. Thanks to this project, untreated rainwater and sewage water will be prevented from leaking into large water bodies in the region. Additionally, the storage places to be located inside the tunnel will also capture and temporarily hold more than 29 million gallons (109.8 million liters) of rainwater and sewage water during heavy rainfall. Thanks to this, both the biggest problem of the city will be solved and the damage to nature will be prevented.

In the project, which started last year and will be completed in 3 years, we are producing the necessary steel structures for the huge tunnels that will reticulate the city from within. The construction began last September from Ballard, the west point of the tunnel. Then, it will head for Fremont and Queen Anne. We will continue to produce the steel structures required for each step of the project.

We carefully handle new projects in order to deliver the current ones on time, which we carry out in Europe, Canada, Australia, Africa and America. We are now in touch with some companies in Malta, France and Switzerland. New project offers are also coming from Canada and Australia. But we waited January to evaluate offers in U.S. Because, we’ll also be increasing our capacity in the first months of 2023. Then, we will start negotiations for new projects.

When we founded Mono Steel, we had in mind to become a global brand. But first of all, we must have been a sought-after and respected brand with qualified and quality workmanship. We’ve worked hard for that, too. We have properly delivered the projects we have undertaken in Turkey. While our projects in Turkey were going on, we also started to carry out some small projects abroad, and these small works brought us bigger, even mega ones. We have never given up on acting with the right strategies, being the solution partner of our customers, and our quality workmanship even for a second. But most importantly, we have enabled our customers to trade comfortably and confidently, as if they procure goods from the domestic market.

Even Skyscrapers Can Withstand Earthquakes with Steel Construction

2023

Mustafa Toprakçeken, CEO and partner of Mono Steel, emphasizes that although steel structures are not widely used in Türkiye, they are preferred in many countries for mitigating earthquake impacts. He notes the necessity of special engineering techniques for high-rise buildings.

He adds: “If we aim to build earthquake-resistant buildings in Türkiye, we must increase the use of steel structures and develop architectural solutions tailored to seismic risks.” Steel construction systems, commonly used in Europe, the US, and Canada, offer a safer structural model due to their flexibility.

Post-Tohoku 2011 earthquake research showed that many buildings with steel systems remained intact. Toprakçeken also states that in Türkiye, only 2% of shopping malls and office buildings are built using steel systems, though high-rise buildings would be much safer if designed with steel.

Steel Structures Stand Out in Earthquake Performance

2023

Following the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye, a critical question emerged: how resistant are our buildings to seismic activity? While current buildings often use concrete, cement, rebar, and aluminum elements, research suggests that steel structures offer significantly better durability than reinforced concrete.

Mustafa Toprakçeken, CEO and co-founder of Mono Steel, stresses that “we must learn to live with earthquakes,” and emphasizes that by taking proper precautions, we can reduce damage. He states that spreading steel construction systems across Türkiye would significantly improve seismic safety.

Toprakçeken adds: “Every earthquake has revealed how unprepared we are. Experts foresee a major earthquake hitting Istanbul above magnitude 7. While we cannot prevent quakes, with proper structural planning, we can reduce loss.”

He concludes: “If you’re looking for a seismic-resistant construction model, widespread use of steel structures is key to reducing earthquake damage.”

Steel Structures Reduce Collapse Risk

Steel structures, widely used in Europe, the US, and Canada, are favored for their flexibility and low risk of collapse. Their elastic properties allow them to absorb seismic loads without breaking. These modern engineering solutions provide better protection for both lives and property, thanks to their lightweight and durable nature. Their reduced mass and energy absorption capacity also minimize vibration effects, and steel structures are completed faster than concrete alternatives.

After the devastating earthquakes in Turkey, one key question emerged: how resilient are our buildings to earthquakes? While most current buildings use concrete, cement, and rebar, research shows that steel structures are significantly more durable than reinforced concrete.

Mustafa Toprakçeken, CEO and partner of Mono Steel, emphasizes the importance of learning to live with earthquakes, stating that with proper precautions, damage can be minimized. He highlights that reliable buildings can be easily constructed using steel construction systems in Turkey.

Toprakçeken adds that earthquake-resistant designs and preparation are vital, noting that major tremors are expected throughout Turkey and especially a high-magnitude one in Istanbul. “We cannot prevent earthquakes, but we can reduce loss with proper construction,” he says.

In the past few years, we’ve grown rapidly, especially in the European and African markets.”

He added: “We canceled our planned facilities in Europe during the pandemic and chose to invest in Sakarya instead, creating jobs and contributing locally. As of 2022, Mono Steel has become a respected and well-known Turkish brand abroad, having achieved our export goals with pride.”

“We continue to build partnerships worldwide. With new agreements in the US and new projects in Europe, we’ll keep supporting employment and the economy,” he concluded.

Nearly 20 billion Euros were spent on the tunnel, the construction of which began in 1999 by a consortium including Mono Steel. During the 21 years of construction work, 300 km of rails were laid. More than 2,500 Turkish and foreign workers took part in the tunnel, which has a total length of 152 km. Mustafa Toprakçeken, one of Mono Steel's partners, explains: "We are proud to have inscribed the Turkish name onto the world by participating in many important projects such as the Ford Factory, Rixos Hotels, Paris Metro, Munich Metro, Stockholm Metro, Lausanne Tunnel Project, and Snowy 2.0 Hydro Power Plant Project. Participating in a world-renowned project like Gotthard has also been a significant achievement for us. Our speed in planning, production, supply, and logistics; combined with our quality workmanship, professional perspective, and on-site analyses, allowed us to easily overcome such a large burden. We have put our signature on the world's longest and deepest tunnel, and now we continue on our path towards even bigger projects." Founded in Sakarya by Mechanical Engineer Mustafa Toprakçeken and Murat Özcan, Mono Steel is a well-established company that completes the supply for many projects in Turkey (from shopping malls to stadiums, housing, bridges). The brand, which has become a sought-after player in the Canadian, UK, Australian, European, and African markets, solidifies its position by participating in world-renowned projects such as tunnels, metros, and hydroelectric power plants.

Turcomoney Dergisi - Mustafa Toprakçeken Röportajı

Mono Steel | CEO Interview

2021

Turkey’s Export Potential and Mono Steel’s Global Success

Mustafa Toprakçeken, CEO of Mono Steel, shared the company’s national and international achievements, export goals, and industry insights in an interview with Turcomoney. Throughout the interview, Toprakçeken emphasized Turkey’s high export capacity and highlighted Mono Steel’s operations spanning from Europe to Africa, the Middle East to Central Asia.

Strategic Projects and Export Goals

Toprakçeken stated that Mono Steel has participated in all major projects in Turkey, actively contributing to projects for global brands like Toyota and Hyundai. In Turkey, the company provided turnkey steel construction services for projects such as Emaar Square, Çanakkale Bridge, Trakya Döküm, and Samsun Stadium.

Internationally, Mono Steel has been involved in high-volume projects such as the Paris Metro, Gotthard Base Tunnel, Nebit Dağı market in Turkmenistan, a stadium in Iraq, military depots in Afghanistan, and various projects across Africa. All these projects were executed with Turkish engineering and production capabilities.

Production Capacity and Employment

Mono Steel’s annual production capacity is approximately 14,000 tons. In 2020, the company achieved exports worth approximately 16 million Euros in the steel construction sector. The company prioritizes efficiency by managing all processes, from production to design, with high automation. The group, which has production and management offices in Istanbul and Germany, employs over 2,000 people across three companies.

Global Growth and Adaptability

Toprakçeken emphasized Turkey’s greatest advantage as its high adaptability, noting that Turkey has emerged as a new trade hub following export taxes imposed on China. He shared plans to maintain their position in the European market while expanding their presence in Africa, Canada, and the Middle East.

Next-Generation Work and Digitalization Vision

The company’s 10-year vision includes establishing at least five dealerships on each continent and transitioning to a fully automated foreign trade system. Simplifying and making information accessible aims to increase efficiency rather than reduce workforce.

Insights on the Construction and Steel Industry

Toprakçeken predicts that the construction sector will face more challenging times due to rising commodity prices. Despite structural issues in Turkey, he emphasized the importance of using steel construction in residential buildings. The company models steel production to meet local standards and international quality expectations, digitizing all processes, including labeling.

Advice for Entrepreneurs

Toprakçeken advised entrepreneurs looking to expand abroad to adopt a strategic approach to region selection, cultural adaptation, and sustainable business models. He emphasized starting small and growing systematically, adopting a high-trust trade approach: “You will procure from us as if you were buying from your own home.”

America Chooses Mono Steel For Its Mega Project

2021

Mono Steel, known for designing qualified steel structures for major projects worldwide, is now bringing its successful track record from Europe, Africa, the UK, and Australia to America. In Seattle’s mega project, the “Ship Canal Water Quality” project, Mono Steel will produce the steel structures required for the massive tunnels that will encircle the city underground. The company will be involved in every step of the three-year project.

The project, planned with an investment of $870 million, is an environmental sustainability initiative aimed at preventing untreated stormwater and sewage from leaking into the region’s major water bodies. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the project will prevent up to 75 million gallons (284 million liters) of polluted water from flowing annually into Lake Washington Ship Canal, Salmon Bay, and Lake Union.

Additionally, storage sections to be placed inside the tunnel will capture and temporarily hold over 29 million gallons (109.8 million liters) of stormwater and sewage during heavy rainfall.

In October, Mono Steel’s CEO, renowned businessman Mustafa Toprakçeken, finalized the agreement with SPU (Seattle Public Utilities) for the project. He stated, “We are taking our first steps in America with the Seattle Ship Canal Water Quality project. We are proud both as a company and as a nation that they trusted us for such a significant project.”
